Some great knowledge for the Great Dane owner
I am going to provide you with some knowledge into Great Dane health, and colors.
Bloat (GDV):
A Great Dane is more likely to get bloat because they are a giant breed, and have deeper chests. The dogs stomach fills with gas, and puts pressure on the diaphragm, which in turn causes your dog to have shortness of breath. In this instance, the dogs stomach can also twist, cutting off all circulation to the intestines and colon. When you see the signs, drive to your nearest vet IMMEDIATELY. This is a life or death situation.
SIGNS:
Enlarged abdomen
Labored breathing
Excessive drooling
Foaming at the mouth
Weak pulse
Vomiting
Paleness in the nose and mouth
CAUSES:
Over eating
Excessive drinking
Playtime directly after eating or over drinking
Rolling after eating or drinking
PREVENTION:
The number one thing I tell everyone is to let your puppy or adult romp it out prior to providing food or water. When they have settled down, allow them to eat and drink. Once they are done, give them a crate rest, rest on the couch, dog bed, your bed, wherever! Just give them a rest. Stomach tacking is not 100%. I personally don't believe it to be 50%. In the event a dogs stomach twists during bloat, with the stomach tacked, it typically rips the stomach open. I personally, have never had the surgery done on any of my dogs, and I don't intend to either.
DCM (Dilated Cardiomyopathy)
What is DCM?
DCM is a disease of the heart when the wall thins out, and dilates. Typically no signs or symptoms are shown for several years. The heart wall will eventually give out, or heart failure will begin, and unfortunately there is nothing that can be done.
What causes DCM?
There currently is no genetic test for DCM, however in some instances it can be genetic. DCM has recently been linked to several grain free dog foods. I have attached the release from the FDA below. Please avoid these grain free foods at all costs.
